Onion

 The production of the onions in Kitami, which are well known nationwide, is the biggest in Japan, and it occupies 54.5% of that in Hokkaido (according to the 2010 agricultural statistics by the Okhotsk General Promotion Bureau). The most productive areas are Kitami city, Kunneppu town, and Bihoro town.

It is said that they started to grow onions in the Kitami region in the sixth year of Taisho (1917). They received seeds from Sapporo and began to plant them. In the 1970fs, the area of planting onions was over 30% of that in Hokkaido and it spread rapidly after the policy of reducing acreage under cultivation was introduced.

The main brands today are, a very early variety, Kita Wase No. 3, an early variety, Okhotsk No. 1, and a mid-early variety, Kita Momiji 2000, which are first shipped in mid?August and can be shipped until around May the following year. Recently, there are more varieties of onions, such as Red eye, Red one, and Kurenai, as well as Kotan, Wolf and Kamui, which are resistant to disease and can be stocked for longer periods of time.

Kita Wase No.3
This is a very early variety and begins to ship in mid?August. The size of an onion is big and its product amount is high. It has a mild taste and is good for eating raw.
Okhotsk No.1
This is the main brand that is an early variety and begins to ship around September, after Kita Wase No.3. This can be stocked longer, until around May, the following year.
Kita Momiji 2000 / Super Kita Momiji
These are the main brands in Hokkaido, which are mid?early variety. They become sweeter after being cooked and can be preserved for a long time.

This is harvested the earliest of all the onions in Kitami. The harvest starts in late?July and its shipment ends in August. This is a limited?time onion. As you can guess from its name, its tender leaves and mild taste make it the perfect onion for salads. It has ayYES! cleanzmark, conformed to the standard of YES! This is a new brand that came from a native species, Sapporo Ki. This onion is mild and the deep sweetness increases when it is cooked or fried. Itfs also soft enough to have raw in salads.

Picolos

This onion has a diameter of about four centimeters. It can be used whole in soup or stew. As a choice Western vegetable, it is needed for restaurants and places that serve food and drinks. Picolos from Kitami are shipped mainly to Sapporo and metropolitan areas.
